Howard Edward Riley

May 1950 - September 19, 2017

Howard passed away after a more than 10-year battle with cancer.

He is predeceased by his parents, Ken and Wilma (Billie) Riley, and his brother, Glenn Riley, and is survived by his brothers, Robert and Barry Riley, and sisters, Madeline Riley and Judy Smith, and many nieces, nephews and great nieces/nephews.

Howard spent many years traveling across Canada where he worked in the forestry industry, was a short-order cook, and finally was a pilot car driver in Alberta, piloting the vehicles hauling the windmill blades to their destinations, before coming back to Nanaimo in 2008, where he was born.

He was a quiet person with a kind heart. He was always willing to help.

He went into cancer drug trials saying that if they didn't help him, they might help someone else down the road.

He enjoyed living at Buttertubs where he had wonderful neighbours, and the staff made him feel just like family.

Special thanks to the Home Care nurses and workers for helping Howard to stay at home.

The family wishes to thank the Doctor and nurses in Emerg, who were so kind, and to Corinne in Paliative Care who took such great care of Howard and his family in his final hours.

Howard's favourite time was when he was bowling. He loved the sport, loved his team and the members of his league, and also the personal competition he had with his sister.

Howard's family would like to have a remembrance held for him in the place where he had fun - at Brechin Lanes, 1870 East Wellington Road, on Thursday, October 5th, at 12:30 PM.

Howard had stated that he would like to sponsor a game of bowling for all family and guests, so please come out for Howard, have a little lunch and a free game of bowling. He will be pleased!
