84, passed away peacefully on November 25th, 2003. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Betty Wong, 2 sons, Fred Wong & Steven G. Wong & his wife Louise; grandchildren Alaina, Justin & Celine Wong. He is survived by: sisters Mamie Sing, Ella Jay & Nellie Bernard & her husband Ed Bernard; brother Gunnar Wong & his wife Alice Wong; Lennie Wong spouse of the late Dr. John Wong; many nephews, nieces, grandnephews & grandnieces. He was predeceased by his sister Lila Collier, his brothers Dr. John Wong & Henry Wong. He was born and lived all of his life in Nanaimo. His father died when Chuck was 22. He carried on with the family business called the Canton Restaurant aided by his brothers. He was the president of Wong Bros. Enterprises Ltd. which owned and operated The Diners’ Rendezvous for over 40 years and many years ago the Modern Cafe. He was a past president and a member of: the Gyro Club for 40+ years; the Chinese Memorial Society; the Nanaimo Chinese Cultural Society; Cathay Seniors Housing Society; Chinese Friendship Society; and Canadian Restaurant Association Vancouver Island division. In 1992 he received the Canadian Confederation Medal. He is a past recipient of the Man of the Year award from the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the St. John’s Ambulance Society. In 2002 he received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Malaspina University and became a Freeman of the City. The family wishes to thank Dr. Kenyon, the doctors and nurses at the 1st floor of the Nnaimo Regional Hospital and the Ambulance attendants from the St. John Ambulance Society for the exemplary care they provided to him. A Celebration of Chuck’s Life will take place at St. Andrew’s United Church, 311 Fitwilliam St. on December 7th at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Malaspina University, 900 Fifth St., Nanaimo V9R 5S5 re: the Chuck Wong Memorial Fund or the the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, 4B-70 Church Street in memory of Chuck Wong.
