Oakley, Harriet May

(nee Morrell)

April 9, 1933 – March 12, 2012

Surrounded by loving family, Harriet (Hattie) passed away in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on March 12, 2012 at the age of 78. Predeceased by her loving husband, William (Bill), she is now reunited with him.

Born in New Brunswick, Hattie had a spirit and determination that brightened the lives of those who knew her. While raising her children she managed to run a boarding house and work in a restaurant. In 1971, Hattie and Bill moved their family to Victoria, B.C. and eventually made Nanaimo, B.C. their home. Despite many years on the west coast, Hattie missed being with her family in New Brunswick.

Her sense of humour was matched by her compassion and conviction to stand firm in her beliefs. Never judgmental, Hattie was always grateful for time spent with family and friends, embracing them all for who they are.

Hattie enjoyed her Pepsi and evenings playing bingo in the company of Bill and her many good friends. Her pride and joy was her children and grandchildren.

Hattie is survived by 3 daughters: Bonnie (Gerry) Tice, Heather Ewald (Ross White), Lisa (Gunnar) Myhrer; and, son Terry (Jenny) Reicker. She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren: Lindsay, Christopher, Danielle, Nicolas, Paige, Samantha and Dylan; 5 sisters, 4 brothers and extended family back East.

When asked how she was, Hattie always replied “I can’t complain” or “I’m still here”. You are still here Hattie, in our hearts where you shall forever be.

A heartfelt thank you to the home support workers for their care and compassion. Lisa and Gunnar, thank you so much for all the love and care you provided Mom in her final years.

There will be no service upon request.

“Mom / Gramma, you were such a fun and loving person in our lives and will be truly missed.”
