May 22, 1941 - November 24, 2018
Hans Herding passed away peacefully November 24, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. He was 77 years of age. Hans fought two long and courageous battles with cancer; the first he won against non-Hodgkin lymphoma only to lose the second round to a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as Merkel Cell Carcinoma. He is predeceased by his parents John & Marie, and brother Tom. He is survived by his loving wife Faye of 58 years, sons Rick (Heather) and Russ (Lorrie), grandchildren Bryce, Jason (Kim), Reid, Rhylee, Ashton, Emma, and Amanda, and also by sister Elsie. He cherished his grandchildren and was excited to hear recently of the upcoming birth of his first great-grandchild in March of 2019.

Hans loved to tinker, to fix things, and to build stuff. He could often be found at his workbench or in his back yard working on his latest patio extension, garden bench, bird feeder, or fancy gate. He especially loved his back yard fire pit. There he enjoyed many a summer night with family and friends telling his patented corny jokes and sharing funny stories. Hans was a loving and devoted husband, a caring father, a patient grandfather, and a good honest friend to many. We will all miss him dearly. Hans' family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Robin Love and staff at the Medical Arts Centre, and Drs. Vanessa Bernstein, Jorge Denegre, & Hosam Kader at the BC Cancer Agency. Heartfelt thanks also to Dawn and the wonderful nurses and staff at the Nanaimo Health Unit who helped so much during Hans' final days.

A memorial service for Hans will be held in Nanaimo on Saturday, December 8, 1 pm at the Branch 256 Legion at 1630 East Wellington Road.In lieu of flowers, Hans' family asks that donations be made in his name to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund.
