With deep sadness we share the news of the sudden passing of Gunner in Nanaimo. Predeceased by his mother, Mah Sze, and father, Wong Kee, and siblings, Henry, Chuck, John, Lila, Mamie, and grandson Justin.
He is survived by his wife, Alice of 62 years, six children: Shirley (Wah-Free), Janice, Rick (Jane), Gerry, Ron (Heather), Carolyn (Des); fourteen grandchildren: Courtney (Mike), Melanie, Candice, Ashley, Brandon, Josh, Cameron, Sabrina, Veronica, Alexandra, Sienna, Amanda, Brennan, and Sarah; two great grandchildren: Roen, and Aja, and many nieces and nephews and many good friends. Gunner was born, raised and lived in Nanaimo his whole life. He was an entrepreneur, restaurateur, chef, handy-man and builder.
Gunner is most well-known to the Nanaimo community as chef and co-owner of The Diner’s Rendezvous Restaurant (1956-2000), which was one of Nanaimo’s first full service restaurants in downtown Nanaimo. Gunner managed the restaurant until its closing and his retirement. Previously he co-owned the Canton Restaurant in Nanaimo’s Chinatown and the Modern Café. With his expertise in construction, Gunner also helped build Mrs Riches Restaurant.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 21st at the Vancouver Island Convention Centre, Mt. Benson Room, 101 Gordon Street, Nanaimo, BC. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations to the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
