MCLEAN, Gordon Bruce

Born Nov. 14, 1918 in Weyburn, SK, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather died on January 22, 2009 in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Predeceased by his parents, two brothers and one sister. Survived by his loving wife Rene (Irene) of 35 wonderful years, daughter Heather (Dennis) Marks, Jeannie (Doug) Clarke, son Duncan (Jenny) McLean, stepson Christopher (Judy) Falk, 17 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and brothers Les, Elwood and Bud McLean. His first wife Betty also survives him. Gordon was a UBC graduate in Education and enjoyed many years of teaching, first in New Denver, Powell River, then Burnaby where he taught English and French at Burnaby North Secondary School, well liked by his students. He had a lifelong interest in ideas, in photography, and in the outdoors, especially hiking and mountain climbing. His early family and later Rene enjoyed wonderful years of exploring the coast with him. Gordon and Rene shared a passion for classical music which continued to the end. They discovered later that they had shared the same music appreciation course at UBC in 1950. Above all he cherished family and married life.

He had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for the last five or six years and was in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for the last two weeks after a fall. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses for their fine care of Gordon. A celebration of Gordon’s life will be held at the Unitarian Fellowship of Nanaimo, 595 Townsite Rd., Nanaimo on Friday, January 30 at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, 2571A Quadra St., Victoria, BC V8T 4E1.
