In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Glenn Sherman DiGeorgio on October 25th, 2022, at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital in the Palliative Care Unit. Glenn was surrounded by family at his side, as they reminisced about all the good times and memories they shared and laughed about all the funny moments that happened over the many years. We felt so fortunate to have had this time with him.
Glenn will be so very missed by his surviving wife and soulmate, Sandra; daughters, Karen (Cameron), Jo-Anne, and Glynis (Tony); son, Tony; grandchildren, Christina (Kyle), Kaylee, Camille (Duncan), Alexis, Jake, Emilia, and Clayton (Emilly). He will also be forever remembered by his very close brother-in-law, Lorne Mackenzie (Mila); nephew, Andrew (Jess); niece, Alexandra; and extended family members.
Predeceased by his parents, Lillian Marie DiGeorgio and John Domenic DiGeorgio and one brother. He is survived by family in Fernie, B.C.
Glenn loved life and lived life to its fullest, each and every day. He had a great sense of humour and an infectious laugh. He was passionate about all his endeavours from the moment he graduated from university. His teaching career started when he taught for one year in Kamloops, then moved to Nanaimo in 1959 and began his career teaching for School District 68. He taught in two secondary schools, then transferred to the District School Board office and became the Coordinator of the Action Nanaimo Program, and eventually was the principal of two alternative schools. Glenn never got tired of teaching. To him, it was the greatest job he could have asked for, even stating once, "I should be so lucky to have this job in another life!"
Glenn's dedication and devotion to physical health, sports, and coaching led him to his role as a National Coach for Sport Canada where he had the privilege of coaching many athletes from around the world. He also had the honour of participating in the Olympic Games which he was so proud of, particularly in throwing events. It was so very important to Glenn to 'get school children moving!' He wrote textbooks and conducted seminars and workshops for teachers in Nanaimo and other schools in B.C., all based around the notion that physical activity is vital to our health and well-being, and the enthusiasm from children in their youth was an excellent place to devote that energy!
In Glenn's later years, he took much pride and joy in reflecting on all the fond memories and experiences he had with his long-time fishing friends and the great trips they had. He was fortunate to enjoy playing golf each week with long-time friends, and he also played rugby with the Nanaimo Hornets Rugby Club up until the age of 50. Glenn was instrumental in the growth of the Hornets in the 1960s and spoke so fondly of the many teammates and friendships he had, which were all very special to him. He was initiated into the Life Time Members Shield a few years ago. Glenn's numerous accolades, accomplishments, and awards were endless. As quoted by a dear friend, "Nothing was too much trouble for Glenn." He was one of a kind, a man of true passion and dedication.
The family would like to thank all their good friends for the cards, and messages of condolence, and for sharing their memories of Glenn. They all brought comfort to us.
Thank you to Yates Memorial Services in Parksville, B.C. for their help and support to Sandra during this difficult time.
A private family celebration, which Glenn participated in, was held in Palliative Care.
