MILFORD, GEORGE RUSSELL

– 1923 ~ 2009 –

George passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at age 86. He was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He was predeceased by his parents: Russell and Mary Milford; his two brothers: Jack and Howie and his sister Grace Boylan. He was also predeceased by his two beloved sons Russell and Ken. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Audrey; his son, Dale (Shannon); and his daughters, Shelley Matthewman (Dave), Cherylyn Hansen (Bill) and his daughter-in-law Linda; his grandchildren: Sarah, Patrick, Richelle, Jeremy, Chad, Scott, Tyler and Derek.

George led a very busy life. He played hockey in Lethbridge, Alberta and then arrived in Nanaimo in 1946 to play hockey with the Clippers. He tried several occupations in Nanaimo before beginning work at Harmac, which spanned 27 years. In his lifetime, he coached soccer, led a cub pack and umpired softball. He also became involved in local politics as a Trustee, chairman and then director in the Northfield Fire Protection District of Nanaimo.

George was a veteran and served on HMCS Montreal for approximately 18 months during World War 2. He visited Montreal when the original HMCS Montreal was decommissioned. He was a member of Canadian Legion Branch #257.

Thanks to Veteran Affairs for their assistance over the past few years. Thank you to Tommy Douglas for instituting the Health Care program whose benefits were appreciated by George and others. Thank you to the ambulance and fireman for your prompt and professional service and attention. Thank you Brian Seed and other neighbours for your thoughtfulness. We would also like to thank the staff in the hospital emergency and ICU, Dr. McLaren and Dr. Jennifer O’Farrell for the wonderful care that was given to George.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 24, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Legion Branch #257 in Lantzville. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
