George Gunnis Gerard

June 12,1944 – July 9, 2016

A bright and special light was extinguished with the passing of George on July 9, 2016. This day was also the 50th Wedding Anniversary of George and loving wife Inga. George was surrounded by his devoted family as he made his final journey to everlasting life.

George was born and raised in Nanaimo. As a youth George excelled at sports such as soccer, basketball and baseball. He enjoyed swimming and diving. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting.

George started his career in the construction industry and worked his way up to the position of Superintendent. He then joined the Nanaimo Fire Department in 1973 and remained until his retirement, from his position as Inspector with the Fire Prevention Branch, on Jan 31, 2000. He thoroughly enjoyed his regular get togethers with the Old Ashes.

George had a wide and varied circle of friends and acquaintances and cherished them all. His acts of kindness, support and generosity have truly enriched many lives.

George was a dedicated member of AA. He was a supportive member and mentor to many.

He expressed his gratitude for how fortunate he had been to have shared 16 years of retirement with Inga doing what they love best: fresh air, sunshine, fishing, traveling and friendships developed over many seasons at China Creek. His prowess in the ability to catch and smoke fish are legendary. Fortunately, for many of us, he loved to share.

A special, unassuming but undeniably funny man, he left in indelible mark on those he left behind. George will be fondly remembered by many.

George will be joining his daughter Dena, who pre-deceased him in 1978. Mourning his loss are his loving, dedicated wife Inga, and his pride and joy, son George, (Kelly), his beautiful granddaughter Alyson, who made him smile every time she was near, as well as many members of his extended family and numerous friends and acquaintances.

Thanks are extended to all the medical personnel, family and friends who offered their support during such a difficult time.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Nanaimo Yacht Club, 400 Newcastle Avenue, Nanaimo from 1:30 - 4:30 on July 17th, 2016.

In lieu of flowers a donation to a charity of your choice would be much appreciated.
