With profound sadness we share that George Edward Remmington, 85, passed away on June 20, 2017 in Nanaimo, BC. He was born on August 19, 1931 in Romford, England.

George is survived by his son Stephen (Roberta), grandchildren Laura (Paul), Alexandra (Lance) and Christopher (Jillian), great-grandchildren Georgia, Malcolm, Elizabeth and Margot, as well as his siblings James, John and Betty. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, daughter Tracey, sister Annette and his parents George & Annie.

Growing up in England during WWII provided George with a resilient, resourceful and ever optimistic outlook on life. He was actively involved in the Boy Scouts throughout his youth, and spent many days cycling around England. One of his favorite stories was about his descent down Countisbury Hill on his bicycle with two friends (See YouTube). As a young adult, he spent 3 years in the Royal Air Force eventually serving as RADAR Instructor.

In June 1955 George married the love of his life Shirley, and they eventually had two children, Stephen and Tracey. The family came to Canada in 1967, where George managed the auto body shop for Maclin Ford in Calgary, AB. George and Shirley moved to Vernon, BC in 1974 where George began his career with ICBC. Together they volunteered at the Powerhouse Theater to indulge their passion for acting. George also contributed to set design and construction, demonstrating his excellent carpentry skills. They finally settled in Nanaimo, BC in 1986, spending summers creating cherished memories for their grandchildren. Whether playing at the beach, putting on silly plays, making meals or building them things in his workshop, it was always special. He and Shirley also spent many years making good friends and volunteering with the Nanaimo Theatre Group.

In his later years he enjoyed traveling to England, New Zealand, and Europe. He also made many trips to Calgary to visit his son, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. As his health deteriorated, his final days were largely spent sitting in his solarium appreciating the beauty of the wildlife and scenery of the Strait of Georgia.

George was a true gentleman who led a good and full life. He was dearly loved, and he will be greatly missed.

An open house for friends and family to celebrate George’s life will be held on Wednesday July 12, 2017 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at 136 Sand Piper Place, Nanaimo BC. Please RSVP to Steve.Remmington@Entero.com
