George DeLure

October 3, 1938 – December 9, 2018
We know him as Dad, Papa, Pops, Sparky and even Walter and it is with sadness and pride we announce the death of George Charles Elliott deLure. George passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at the Cowichan District Hospital with his family around him. He was a cool 80 years old.

George was preceded in death by his father, Charles; his mother, Elizabeth (Maisie); his baby brother, Bruce and his sister, Judy. He is survived by his wonderful wife, Beverley; one brother and two sisters; four children; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren as well as many extended family, friends and colleagues.

George was born on Saltspring Island, BC on October 3, 1938. As a young boy he moved to Victoria where he grew up, running around with the other James Bay Boys. He dedicated his life to his passions: his family, his career and his community.

After retirement George continued a legacy of generosity and humility. He gave his time and resources to countless community institutions, organizations and causes. One of his recent passions was preservation of the Cowichan Lake ecosystem and up until his death he was an advocate for protection and monitoring of the lake. It is in this lake we promise to continue his hunt for the “Lunker of the lake,” while keeping one eye out for a sidehill gouger.

When we think of George we think legacy. His integrity, generosity and humility contributed to our lives in so many ways. He has left us, and our world unalterably changed and for that we celebrate. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2019, 1 to 5 pm, Nanaimo Conference Centre.

In lieu of donations, please honor George’s personal belief that a person’s true wealth is the good they do in the world. Pay it forward and if you ever need to find him, look no further than the funny papers. He’s waiting to see you there.
