George Brierley CHADWICK

December 23, 2003

Chadwick, George Brierley (Ph.D. ) died at home after a long fight with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was born in 1931, son of Percy and Mabel Chadwick, in Vancouver Canada. He is survived by his beloved wife Kamilla Charlotte, his son Bruce Chadwick - Ph.D., now in New York City, two step sons, Michael Gordon Lyness and Roger Eugene Lyness, of Atlanta GA and San Jose, CA. His sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Ron Duff, of Burnaby, BC also survive him as do three nieces, Catherine, married to Peter Cook and with children Jamie and Carolyn, Jennifer with son Adam, and Patricia. George became a physicist during his UBC studies, winning scholarships that led to getting a Ph.D. at Cambridge University, England. He was induced to follow Elementary Particle Physics by his new supervisor Denys Wilkinson, and continued with this for the remainder of his working life. Thereafter his career took him to the site of many newly built accelerators where he was instrumental in commissioning new experiments. George’s son Bruce was born in 1968. In 1977 George and Kamilla met in Chicago just as both were finalizing divorces and decided to combine forces to return to California and George’s job at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) a government facility run by Stanford University. In 1992, while on Sabbatical leave at the TRIUMF facility in Vancouver, George and Kamilla accepted an early retirement package from SLAC. It was natural to remain living in Nanaimo by the eternal sea. A memorial reception will be held on Tuesday, December 30th, 2003 at 2:00pm at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1 Newcastle Avenue, Nanaimo, BC.Private family cremation.
