Gavin passed away at Eden Gardens with his loving wife Rose and family by his side. He was diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease in 2011, went into care March 2016.
He is survived by his wife Rose of 40 years, his children: Leslie Ballantyne - ALTA, Gaylene Black (Don) Cumberland, Cristine Tames (Paul) Comox, Laurie Annand, Comox,
Larry Ballantyne, ALTA, Steve Ballantyne, ALTA, Geoff Ballantyne (Annette) Courtenay, his wife's children: Lynn Clark, Fraser Lake BC, Leslie Smith (Partner James) Victoria, Lori Carey (Randy) Whitehorse, Yukon, many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. His sister Van Doward, Chemainus and brother Robert Ballantyne (Eilene) Powell River. Predeceased by his parents Albert and Ethel Ballantyne and Barb Ballantyne.
Gavin was the eldest of four children. While attending school in Victoria he delivered papers, made home deliveries on his bike for a local Butcher Shop, was a member of the Victoria Cycling Club and held the Junior Boys Championship for 1947-1948.
Gavin worked as an Oiler on the Kahloke, BC Ferries. Later obtaining his Gas Fitter/Pipe Fitter License. Was employed by several companies as well as his own "Gavin's Gas". Retiring from Fortis, BC in 1997.
Gavin and his wife Rose spent many winters in Mexico in their 5th Wheel, Puerto Rico driving the Island in a rented car. A great vacation in Bahamas and discovering Alaska and Yukon with their Truck and 5th Wheel.
The family would like to thank Dr. Torrie for the care she gave Gavin over the years. The caring Care Partners (You know who you are), the wonderful care the staff gave the family members who stayed at Gavin's bedside.
The send off the staff gave Gavin was very touching and we are sure somehow he felt the love.
To honour Gavin's wishes there will be a simple gathering of family and friends at 4071 Valewood Drive in Deerwood Estates on Sunday, Sept. 22 from 2-4 pm.
