It is with great sadness that the Hodgkins family announces the death of Fred, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather on Sunday, June 11th, 2017 at Royal Jubilee Hospital. At the time of his death Fred was surrounded by his wife and family. Fred is survived by May his loving wife of 74 years, sons Les (Alexis) and Wayne (Cory), daughters Gail (Jim) and Sandra (Don); grandchildren Vanessa (Mike), Angela (Dale), Neil (Trisha), Cameron, Daren (Beth), Jamie, and Lucas; great grandchildren Alyssa and Caius. Other family members include brother-in-law Roy (Sylvia), sister-in-law Norma, chosen daughter Diane, and chosen granddaughter Rie as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends. Fred was born and raised in Russell, Manitoba and enlisted in the RCN in World War II before going on to serve for 25 years in the Signals section. He served on a mine sweeper at Omaha Beach on D Day and was also a veteran of the Korean War. Fred earned numerousservice decorations during his career in the navy and for years afterward was active with the Chief and P.O.’s Association and Fourandex of Canada in Victoria. After ‘retirement’, Fred went on to work for Robbins Parking Service for more than a decade, finally retiring for good in the late seventies. Fred and May built a house on Brannen Lake in Nanaimo and spent many happy years there. During this period May and Fred also travelled extensively around the world. Fred was an active curler in Victoria and Nanaimo for many years and was still throwing from the hack until he was 86. Fred and May were avid gardeners and their vegetables and blooms were the envy of the neighbourhood. A service was held in the chapel at the Victorian on Mackenzie, at 4000 Douglas Street, Victoria, BC on Thursday June 15th, @ 2PM. Special thanks to RJH emergency and 8 South staff and to Brigitte at the Victorian for her support and friendship.
