Fernando Fuentes II

September 6, 1940 - June 24, 2021

Our hearts are aching in sorrow and shock with the sudden passing of our father Fernando Fuentes. Admitted to hospital in the Philippines for critical COVID complications, he passed away June 24, 2021 at 80 years old.

Born Fernando Tantiado Fuentes in our homeland Philippines, he grew up in the small coastal town of Tangalan on the island of Panay. He attended the local elementary school then high school in Aklan College in nearby Kalibo. After moving to Manila, he joined the merchant Marines, studied engineering, then worked at the Department of Oceans & Fisheries where he met our mother. In the early 1970s, with sponsorship from his sister, our family eventually immigrated to Canada in British Columbia, briefly living in Quesnel where he worked. After completing a degree in engineering, our family settled in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island where he spent 20 years working at Harmac pulp mill. Early retirement would bring him & our stepmother back to their Filipino roots in Tangalan.

He is survived by his wife Familde; children Cecilia (Rod), Fernando (Suzanne), and Rafael (Lisa); former wife Teresita and birthmother to his three children; grandchildren Rafael, Zenai, Izaiah; sisters Gerarda and Lucia (Art), and an enormous extended family here in Canada, and abroad in the Philippines and United States. He is predeceased by his father Fernando Fuentes, mother Lutgarda Tantiado, sister Divina Mijares, brothers Victorio and Leopoldo, and granddaughter Madrona.

Highly respected in the community, his generous, kind-hearted, and calm nature will be missed. His boisterous laugh and heart-felt smile will be fondly remembered. We cherish the time spent with our father, those childhood memories of fun and adventure, and those lively and laughter-filled conversations throughout adulthood.

A private Celebration of Life will be confirmed at a later date. Rest in Peace, Pa. You are dearly missed, forever loved.
