In Loving Memory (1934-2023) ~
Evelyn Josephine Mary Cawley, nee Sliney, passed away at 88 years of age on Monday February 20th, 2023 at Nanaimo General Hospital.
Evelyn will be deeply missed by her family in Ireland, which includes her brother Noel, her Goddaughter Yvonne Sliney, and her many nieces and nephews.
She will also be sadly missed by her Canadian family which includes Marie, Jacqueline and Pauline McGuirk and families, Tom and Ann Murphy and family, and Francis Power and family, plus her close friends and neighbors.
Evelyn was predeceased by her mother and father, Sean and Ellen Sliney, husband Joseph Cawley, her sisters Mona and Kathleen, and her brothers Seamus and Patrick.
Evelyn emigrated from Dublin, Ireland in 1956 to join Joe and a few months after her arrival they were married in Terrace Bay, Ontario.
Evelyn and Joe lived in Marathon Ontario for over thirty years. Joe worked in the Pulp and Paper Mill and Evelyn was Head of Housekeeping at the Marathon Hospital, and by all accounts she was an expert at keeping things spick and span.
Evelyn and Joe made a lovely couple, and cultivated many close friendships with their neighbours and work associates in Marathon, Ontario, Campbell River and Nanaimo, B.C.
Evelyn often travelled to Ireland to spend time with her family. She was very close to her Mother and sisters Mona and Kathleen, who, in turn enjoyed their trips to Canada.
Evelyn was an avid seamstress and a fantastic cook and housekeeper. She always created wonderful, tasty meals and baking for Joe and their friends. No one ever went hungry when they visited Evelyn.
In 1986 they moved to the West Coast of Canada and fell in love with Vancouver Island. They settled in Campbell River and enjoyed the lifestyle of the area.
In 1989 Evelyn and Joe moved to Nanaimo and bought a house. Evelyn loved her house and created a warm and welcoming home for Joe.
Evelyn was a very caring wife and nursed Joe through many serious illnesses. In later years she was surrounded by kindly neighbors who always kept a friendly eye on her.
Evelyn loved Ireland and especially her hometown of Dublin. It is only fitting that her remains be buried in Dublin in Glasnevin Cemetery. She will finally be at peace in the place she loved so well.
A sincere thank-you to the staff at Nanaimo Palliative Care Centre and the staff at Dover House Long Term Care Home for the compassion and kindness they have shown to Evelyn.
