VIALA, Elizabeth (Betty)

née Bettany

July 25, 1926 – Aug. 7, 2009

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away surrounded by family on August 7, 2009. Predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Bettany, her brother, Thomas (in WW II) and her sister, Doreen Ruff. She is survived by her loving husband Paul, sons Robert (Lorraine), Ronald (Debbie), John (Sharon), Daniel (Lois), Peter (Lani) Viala and daughter Elizabeth Chaudet, 19 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as six foster children in Mexico, South America and Haiti, and two dear friends, Grace Shelling and Mary O’Shea. Betty was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, and came to Canada with her parents arriving on Christmas Day 1948. She met and married Paul in Duncan in 1950. They moved to Chemainus in 1955, where they raised their family. Betty enjoyed her family, especially big family dinners, reading, painting, needlework, and going for Sunday afternoon drives and having an ice cream cone. Her Rum Sauce on the Plum Pudding will be sorely missed at Christmas.

The family wishes to express special thanks to the Home Support Nurses, the nurses at Chemainus Health Care Centre and to Dr. M. Archdekin. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Christian Children’s Fund.

Funeral service will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 9727 Elm Street, Chemainus, BC, on Saturday, August 15, 2009, at 1:00 p.m.. Tea to follow.
