DR. TERENCE GINN JOLLY

JOLLY, Dr. Terence Ginn

May 19, 1928 – June 8, 2016

After 63 years of marriage and being “teenage sweethearts” God has taken Sarah’s best friend home. Terry was born in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland and after meeting and sweeping Sarah off her feet at a Boy Scout party, he went on to medical school at Queens University Belfast. When he had completed his medical training they got married and went abroad to Fiji where both daughters Denise and Moira were born. They spent four and half years in Fiji and then moved to Eastport and Gander, Newfoundland, and eventually to Winnipeg where Terry continued to practice family medicine for many years. Following 25 years of baby deliveries, home visitations, and late night calls, he retired from family practice to take a position with the Federal Government in Occupational Health. A highlight of this work was his visits to the Arctic checking on the welfare of the personnel stationed at Canadian weather stations. After his retirement from the “Feds” in 1993, they moved to Nanaimo where they lived until Terry’s declining health necessitated a move to Calgary closer to family in 2015. Terry enjoyed books, (collecting and reading many over the years), hiking over plains, mountains and backpacking both the West Coast Trail and even soloed the Chilkoot Trail at the age of 71 years. He was a prolific poetry writer over many years, attributing God for the beautiful vistas and opportunities he experienced. He loved the Lord, and was involved in churches wherever they lived. The “Light of Christ Church” in Nanaimo was their last full time involvement and recipient of many of his prayers. Terry was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease many years ago and his continuing prayer was to not be a burden to his beloved Sarah. Terry’s faith mirrored Isaiah 40:31 “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint”. Terry is now hiking “the street of gold” in Heaven. Left behind to cherish memories of him are his wife Sarah (Sally); daughters Denise MacRae (Scott) and Moira Doerksen (Norm); five grandchildren (spouses) and nine adorable great grandchildren. A Memorial Service celebrating Terry’s life will be held at Highland Mennonite Brethren Church, 4018 Centre B St NW, on Tuesday, June 14, 11:00 a.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes can be given to the Light of Christ Church in Nanaimo, BC (c/o 2122 Gomerich Rd, V9X 1R8) to continue the work that Terry and Sarah were involved in starting. Messages of remembrance may be left for the family at www.southcalgaryfuneralcentre.ca
