Dr. J.H. (Jack) Baldwin

May 17, 1916 ~ January 23, 2010

With profound sadness, the family of Dr. Jack Baldwin announces the passing of this wonderful, compassionate man on January 23, 2010. He slipped gently away from us in the comfort of his own home under the watchful and loving care of family.

Jack lived his nearly 94 years with integrity, humility, dignity and grace. Since the passing of his soul mate, Betty, in 2006, he has shown extraordinary strength, courage and determination to stay with us until both he and the family were more ready to say goodbye.

As a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as a doctor and friend, he was truly loved, respected and admired. He was gentle, kind, honest and had a wry and crazy sense of humour that was endearing.

Jack was born on May 17, 1916 in Moncton, New Brunswick to Warren Leslie Baldwin and Isabel Eddy, a brother to Fred, Helen and Audrey, now survived only by Audrey (Jud) Black, his youngest sister. He was also predeceased by his beloved and only son Bob in 2003, and his first grandchild, Cynthia Pink in 1972.

He is survived by his devoted daughters, Dianne Pink and Cynthia McGhee, caring son-in-law David Pink, special daughter-in-law Patti Baldwin, cherished grandchildren Stephanie and Derek (Jennifer) Pink, Scott (Caroline), Eric and Amy Baldwin and Michael (Veronica) and Lindsay McGhee. Also by treasured great-grandchildren Charlotte, Candice, Clark and Charleigh Pink.

He will also be greatly missed by nieces and nephews who played a loving part in his life.

After graduating from Mount Allison and Dalhousie Universities and serving with the RCAF in Winnipeg as a Flight Surgeon, he arrived in Nanaimo in 1946 with his beautiful new bride, Betty Hunt, and daughter Dianne. He always had a large and busy practice and served the community well, until his retirement in 1988.

Jack loved Nanaimo. He was a founding member of the Nanaimo Lions Club, and was active in the Nanaimo Yacht Club, Green Mountain Ski Club, Westwood Tennis Club, and he and Betty greatly enjoyed many wonderful times with family and friends.

We will miss him so much, and we shall love him forever.

A Service will be held Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 11:30 at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1 Newcastle Avenue. Respects may also be paid from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Friday, February 5, 2010 and prior to the service from 10:00 am.
