In Loving Memory ~

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Alexander Johnston, who left us peacefully on December 21, 2024, at the age of 74. Born on September 22, 1950, to Robert and Mary Johnston of Agincourt, Ontario, Doug was the eldest of six children.

In 1966, Doug moved with his family to Nanaimo, British Columbia, where he would become an active member of the community. In 1972 he married his devoted wife Nancy, and became a proud father to his children Kristine (Bill) and Michael (Sheri).

Doug's greatest joy in life was his four grandchildren: Owen, Nathan, Adelaide, and Sophia. His time spent with them—taking them to movies, hiking in Linley Valley, enjoying ice cream by the waterfront, and sharing his love for sports—was a source of immense happiness for him.

Doug's professional life was marked by his successful career as a Certified General Accountant. He began working at Church, Pickard, Lane and Newman before moving to Barkley, Tarr, Walters and Company and becoming a partner in the firm.

Before his retirement he built a successful accounting practice, Johnston, Johnston & Associates with his son Michael. Doug was also passionate about service and giving back to his community. He played a key role in the building of the McNabb Hockey Arena and in the founding of the VIU hockey team.

Doug's contributions to his community extended to his involvement with several organizations, including the United Way, the Jaycees, the Lantzville Rotary Club, and the Masons, as well as his work with the Nanaimo Foundation and Nanaimo Hospital Foundation.

Doug was a lover of sports, particularly hockey, tennis, golf, and pickleball. Despite the frustration that often came with being a lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan, he remained loyal to the team. In his later years, Doug found great joy in spending time in his "happy place", Mexico, where he enjoyed the warm weather, an active lifestyle, and the company of good friends.

Doug's family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the wonderful care he received in his final months at Keeping House, as well as the many friends who visited him at the hospital and care home. The love and support shown to Doug and his family during this time meant more than words can express.

Doug is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Mary Johnston, and is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, and a host of cherished friends and colleagues.

A celebration of Doug's life will be held at a private family service in Mexico. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Doug will be deeply missed, but his legacy of service, kindness, and love for his family and community will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew him.

Rest in peace, Doug.
