Donald Mark Dechene

May 12th, 1958 – July 17th, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Don Dechene.

Don Dechene: father, brother, son, husband and uncle former RCMP officer, landscaper, faller, outdoorsman, honest and respected man of integrity, was born May 12th, 1958, and died July 17th, 2016. Don was excited to return to work as a faller on the north central coast in spite of the dangers that challenge such work. On July 4th he was injured at work in a serious logging accident. In spite of heroic efforts of the first responders, the medical team in Bella Bella, the emergency airlift transport and excellent doctors and nurses at Vancouver General Hospital, Don succumbed to his injuries. His daughters and former wife, Mary were by his side from his arrival at VGH on July 4th until his death on July 17th, joined by Don’s brother, Brian, as they said goodbye. Don never regained consciousness.

He is survived by his daughters, Rachael and Alicia Dechene, his mother Margaret Dechene, brothers, Warren, Jerry, Brian, Neil, and Jamie, sister Deborah Baldwin (David), former wife Mary, as well as many other family and friends.

Don will always be remembered as a very generous and caring person as well as a loving father, skilled athlete, and an extraordinarily heroic man. May he rest in peace, he will be dearly missed.

A memorial service (or celebration of life) will be held at the Nanaimo Rugby Club on August 10th, 2016 at 6:00pm.
