In Loving Memory ~
Paisley, Derek Mundell peacefully passed away at his home surrounded by his family on October 24, 2022. He will be deeply missed and held in the hearts of his wife, Cathy, his sons, Garry and Mark, daughter in-law, Bonnie, and grandchildren, Gordon, Ewan and Nora. Derek was born in Glasgow and worked in the shipyards of the River Clyde before coming to Canada with his wife and son in 1967.
He had a plan to stay in Canada for five years which turned into his forever home. In 1968 Derek found work in Goldriver at the new paper mill. There he made lifelong friends and started his career in Pulp & Paper. After a small tour in Quesnel, Derek settled in Nanaimo securing his family's future working at Harmac Pulp Mill as a maintenance supervisor where he eventually retired after 29 years.
He was an organizer and player in Men's Soccer Leagues in every town he lived in, bringing his love of the game with him from Scotland. He became a member of the Nanaimo Golf Course as soon as he arrived in town and was a fixture for morning tee times for the last 50 years. He loved to be a part of any adventure with his sons and friends, whether it be camping, fishing or hunting. Derek, growing up in the grey stone buildings of Glasgow, had a respect and wonder for the beauty of BC's west coast.
He often claimed to live in the most beautiful place on earth here in Departure Bay. It is difficult to sum up Derek's life in a paragraph, but Derek's life and legacy can be easily measured by the love of his family and the friends he chose to share his life with. "One of the kindest men I have ever met", said by too many to list. Husband, Dad, Grandad, Uncle, Friend, you will be forever missed, always loved and always remembered.
At Derek's request, there will be no service, but instead a private family gathering.
