November 17, 1944 - September 7, 2020
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Derek Earnest Blick (Pumpkin) who died peacefully in Nanaimo, BC.
Derek was born on November 17th, 1944 to Mildred and Alfred Blick in Calgary Alberta. In 1971, after visiting Vancouver Island with his young family, he quit his job in Calgary and moved his family to Ladysmith, BC.
He worked as a welder for McMillian Bloedel and Weyerhaeuser until his retirement in the late 1990s.
He settled into retirement while living in Port Alberni, BC, with his beloved dog Bailey. Derek got his lovely nickname Pumpkin while working with his friend Jimmy as he wore bright orange coveralls that made him to look like a pumpkin. Derek always looked forward and thoroughly enjoyed his weekly and bi-monthly lunch dates with Jim, Morris, Gerry, and Lorne.
His friends Jim and Debbie were always available to take him out for a treat (medium double and apple fritter), to run errands, or just come for a visit, especially when he moved into Wexford.
He was predeceased by his parents and granddaughter Naomi. He was survived by his sister Joyce Ross, his daughters Allison (David) Little, Andrea (Ryan) Comber and their children Braedon, and Larkin, and his son Matt Blick (Sally) and their children Jarret and Kinley.
His many friends and family will dearly miss him. We would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Wexford Creek for taking care of him over the last four years, especially during this time of COVID-19.
Other special thanks to Dr. Takada who was able to allow us to visit him in his final stages and the exceptional care he provided to our father! There would be no service for him at this time.
