It is with profound sadness the Alf Carter family announce the passing of Deanna, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother following an extended illness. She is survived by husband Alf; three sons: Kevin (Carol), Keith (Holly), and Darren (Wendy); six grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
Born and raised in Nanaimo, Deanna was a graduate in Medical Laboratory Technology from St. Joseph's Hospital in Victoria. She won the Proficiency Award for the top graduate in her class. She met Alf while they were both attending Grade 13 in Nanaimo and were married 3 years later. She worked at St. Joseph's, Kings Daughters, and Cowichan Hospitals in Duncan, and later was a science lab aide in Mackenzie High School.
She lived for her family, especially the many trips to Disneyland. She introduced many new family members to Disney and referred to it as her "happiest place on earth". Her commitment to family was total. Every family interest was fully enjoyed and supported, sometimes at the expense of personal interests as when Alf accepted various roles in the pulp and paper industry requiring family relocation.
For many years she was a principal organizer behind the Mackenzie Minor Baseball program. She also enjoyed the many trips with Alf to baseball spring training in Florida. Deanna and Alf's memorable 60 plus years together included many trips to destinations such as Europe, New Zealand, and Hawaii.
Deanna was intelligent, an avid reader and a crossword expert. The true worth of someone is most notable at the time of loss. Deanna will be dearly missed and forever cherished.
The family offers thanks to Cowichan District Hospital 2nd floor nurses and staff as well as the Cowichan Hospice House staff for their kindness and care. A special thank you to Dr. Nadine Robertson for her compassion and care throughout Deanna's illness - a truly Extraordinary physician.
In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation to Cowichan Hospice House in memory of Deanna would be appreciated.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
