February 4, 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our father and loving grandpa David Robert Scobie on February 4, 2020, at Victoria General Hospital, with his family by his side. He lived life to the fullest with many interests and a keen mind.
David will be fondly remembered by his children Ellen (Hong), Bill (Haley), Joel (Lise), and Niel (Eloisa), their mother Norma Scobie, his six grand-children, Alazne (Brien), Ivor, Jack, Sophie, Davey, and Sammy, his sister Connie, and many nieces and nephews.
David, the fourth of five children, was born on October 28, 1925, in Rosetown, Saskatchewan, to hard-working Scottish immigrants, Bill and Colina, who instilled in him the principals of faith and charity. He is pre-deceased by his parents, his brothers Lewis and Colin, and his sister Anne.
Between 1944-46, David served in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve as a telegraphist. He then enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan where he received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with an option in Horticulture in 1951. In 1956, he obtained his teaching certificate at the University of British Columbia.
David was a high school teacher in Bedfordshire, England, Lake Cowichan, Port Alberni, and had his longest tenure at John Barsby Junior Secondary in Nanaimo between 1964 and 1982. After a second career in real estate, he immersed himself in his lifelong passion for horticulture, attending to his vegetable gardens, award-winning rhododendrons, grafted fruit trees, and his giant sequoia and red maple tree that greet visitors to his home.
David's inquisitive mind led him to be informed on a variety of topics. He also participated in a wide range of activities and was a long-time active member of Trinity United Church, Nanaimo Curling Club, and Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club.
A funeral will take place on Saturday, February 15, 2020, at 11am at Trinity United, 6234 Spartan Rd. in Nanaimo. Donations may be made to Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank (or a food bank of your choice), or Trinity United.
