June 27, 1947 - November 5, 2018
With heavy hearts we announce that David Llewellyn Melnyk passed away November 5, 2018 in Nanaimo BC after a long, hard fought battle with lung disease. He will be greatly missed by his wife Laurel Karjala, his cherished step-daughters Anne and Kate Frobeen, and brothers-in-law Gordon (Linda) Guenette, Ernie (Lianne) Karjala and their families. David was predeceased by his parents Orest and Willa Melnyk and his sister Mona Tansowney.
David was born in Cadomen Alberta, July 27, 1947. David was a vagabond in his teens and twenties and joked that he went out to a party when he was 16 and came home at 35. David and Laurel married in 1998 and after David's retirement from Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, they spent many years on Protection Island. It was there that David turned his artistic talents from painting in oils to working in wood. He made tables, benches, walking sticks and many unique treasures from local maple and cedar.
We wish to thank the many excellent health care professionals that helped David, especially the doctors and nurses in David's final days.
There will be a Celebration of Life for David on Tuesday, November 20th at the Chapel, Bethlehem Centre, 2371 Arbot Road, Nanaimo BC at 2:00 pm.
