It is with deep sadness we announce the death of Cynthia Buckingham (nee Aitken) born February 8th, 1924, in Montreal, Quebec. Cynthia passed on July 13, 2021, at the Nanaimo Regional Hospital after a short bout with an end-of-life illness. Cynthia was predeceased by her husband John who passed away on March 7, 2016, and her daughter Kerry who passed suddenly on April 23, 2017, at the age of 57.
Cynthia was a proud Canadian. She served in the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (Wrens) from 1942-1946 in Deep Brook, Nova Scotia. It was here she met John, her loving husband of 72 years. John was a seaman in the Royal Canadian Navy during the second world war and went on to serve his country and navy until his retirement in 1963, having reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander. John and Cynthia moved from Cornwall , Ontario to Nanaimo in 1969. They were active members of the Nanaimo Golf Course and active in the Nanaimo School Districts, where John served on the school board. Cynthia was a devoted wife, mother, and a travel enthusiast, having worked for a travel agency in her early days.
Cynthia is survived by her daughters, Deidre, Andrea and Jennifer and son Eric and his wife Deborah and devoted son-in-law Tim. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Shelly, Christopher, Loree, Sean, Eric, Katie, Benjamin, Lizzy, Robert and Tina and her great grandchildren, Kieran, Lenie, Georgia May, Djuna Pearl, Cade, Jevan, Kylar, Rylin, McKenzie, Alivia, Brandon, Andrew, and Mathew and her great, great granddaughter Kylie. She is also survived by her caring and loving nephew, Gary.
A private celebration of life ceremony is planned for August.
