Clare passed away peacefully at Nanaimo General Hospital after a brief illness on the morning of January 11 , 2019, with his family by his side. He was born in Vancouver, BC, in 1938, to Art and Ethel Holmes. Predeceased by his parents; his brother, Barry, and his first wife of 28 years, Mae.
Clare is lovingly remembered by Irene Chapman, his wife of 26 years; his sisters Marilyn, and Anne; his son, David (Louise); grandchildren, Luke, Emily and Rachael; son Brian (Tanya); grandchildren, Corey, Jeffrey, Emma, Savannah, Liam, Treymaine, Christine, Jesse and Mia; daughter Shannon (Tim); grandchildren Cassandra, Kyle, Maelynn, Abigail and Gabriel; Step-children Kerry Drescher (Peter), Debbie Punshon, Vikki Tellier (Gerry). He will also be missed by his 8 step-grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
In 1964, Clare graduated with a B.A (UBC) and a Masters of Divinity from Emmanuel College (Toronto). He was a United Church Minister in Lynn Lake MB, Port McNeil and St. Aidans Victoria and a Chaplain at the University of Victoria from 1974 to 1991 where he pioneered the Interfaith Chaplaincy. His last call was at Trinity United in Nanaimo. Clare will be forever remembered for sharing the peace of the lord as a devoted, patient, compassionate, kind, and caring person who touched the lives of so many.
There will be a celebration of life on Friday January 18th at 1 pm Trinity United Church, 6234 Spartan Rd., Nanaimo BC. In lieu of flowers we invite you to donate to a charity of your choice in Clare's honour.
