September 22, 1950 - January 2, 2021
Catherine passed away peacefully at the Palliative Care Unit on January 2, 2021 with her family by her side. She finally lost the battle with cancer that she had fought with such determination and courage.
Catherine was predeceased by her mother, Gloria Shupe, in 1998, her father, Lenard Shupe, in 2007, her father-in-law, Jack Hall in 2013 and her mother-in-law, May Hall in 2019.
Catherine is survived by her husband of fifty years, Dan, her children David and Kimberly Hall and the light of her life, her grandson Ezra Hall. Also surviving her is her sister, Susan McLean of Everett Washington, her uncle and aunt Rick and Kelly Kerly of Nanaimo as well as many aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Catherine was a true Vancouver Island girl. She was born and raised in Ladysmith as were her parents Len and Gloria who lived there all their lives. After marrying Dan in 1970 they moved to Victoria and shortly after were transferred to Vancouver and then three years later were transferred back to Nanaimo. They moved to Port Alberni in 1976 where both David and Kimberly were born.
In 1990 the family moved to Victoria where they lived for twenty years. Catherine had joined the TD Bank while in Port Alberni and continued to work there for thirty three years until she and Dan retired in 2010 and moved back to Nanaimo.
Catherine loved to cook and garden but most of all she loved playing with and doing things for her grandson, Ezra. That was a love that truly knew no bounds.
When Catherine was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 she received chemotherapy at the Cancer Clinic at Nanaimo Regional Hospital. There she met and befriended the volunteers in the clinic.
She was so impressed with how they helped and comforted the cancer patients that she determined that she would join them. Once she completed her treatments she did join them and with her experience as a former patient was able to relate to the patients in a meaningful way. For four years she dove headlong into the volunteer group and derived both satisfaction and a sense of duty in the work.
When cancer was discovered again in 2019, Catherine became a patient in the cancer clinic once more. The volunteers, nurses and doctors all went out of their way to help and comfort her as she was one of their own. Our family cannot thank them enough for their continuing kindness.
Catherine had a smile that would light up the room. She loved her family without reservation and was a true friend. Words cannot express how much we miss her.
There will be a celebration of her life once we are able to gather again.
In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that you make a donation in her name to the cancer clinic at the Nanaimo Regional Hospital.
