Betty Cooper (née Wainman)

Passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the age of 89 years.  Betty, a resident of Nanaimo, BC, died quietly at the NRGH Palliative Care Unit, surrounded by her family.

 Betty was born in Cheshire, England on July 5, 1921 to Ben and Jesse Wainman.  Betty was a kindergarten teacher when she married Eric Cooper in 1945.  They spent some time in East Africa during WWII while Eric was a Royal Army Medical Officer, before returning to Stockport, England, where their two daughters were born.  In 1957 they moved to Victoria, BC, where Betty again taught kindergarten, and they then settled in Nanaimo in 1960.  She was a dedicated Nanaimo Regional General Hospital Auxiliary volunteer, an avid sportswoman, and supported Eric throughout his surgery career.

 Betty is survived by her husband of 66 years, Eric; daughter Jane, and her husband Ron Perala, of Cedar, BC; daughter Sally, and her husband Richard Dutka, of Cedar, BC; by her grandchildren: Cathy Winsby, of Cedar BC, Brooke Dutka and Maiggen Dutka, of Vancouver, BC, and Kyle Dutka and his wife Nikki, of Ladysmith BC, and by her great grandchildren: Brianna, Nick, and Odessa. Betty will also be remembered by her younger brother Roger and his wife Ethel, of Cheshire, England, and numerous family and friends both in Canada and England.     

The family wishes to thank the staff at the NRGH Palliative Care Unit for their support and care during Betty’s time there.  Donations to the memory of Betty may be made to NRGH Palliative Care Unit.
