Bertha Elizabeth Kulai (nee Rowa)

Bertha passed away Monday, August 17, at age 88, after a stroke. A native daughter, Bertha was born in East Wellington, July 7, 1921.

Predeceased by her husband William in 1986, father and mother Charles and Margaret Rowa (nee Kidd); brothers Ronald and Clarence. She will be deeply missed by her sons: Larry (Bernadette), Brent (Lisa); daughter Janelle Smith (Kelly); grandchildren: Tasha, Taylor, Nicole, Michael, Lindsey, Corbin, Courtney; and great grandchildren: Dakota, Desirea and Ryley.

As a teenager she worked at Spencers Department Store, later working at Safeway.

Mom was famous for her pies with the perfect crust. She loved to travel and enjoyed many winters in Palm Springs with Willy. She also travelled to Hawaii (many times), Disneyland, Disneyworld, Las Vegas, Reno and cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska. In later years she looked forward to her Saturday nights out with the “Golden Girls”.

For the past two years she has been a resident at the Nanaimo Seniors Village.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to all the staff and volunteers in the palliative care unit for their care and support.

A memorial service will be held at Sands Funeral Home, 1 Newcastle Avenue, Nanaimo, at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 21, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
