Tony passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his home, Berwick on the Lake, Nanaimo. He was born in Platischis, Udine, Italy.
Tony was predeceased by his parents: Giuseppe & Maria, his siblings: Gino, Aldo, Italo, Rina & Adelina, and granddaughter Cynthia. He is survived by his wife, Maria, of 66 years, daughter June, son George (Allison), and his grandchildren: Kyle (Kelsey), Shannon (Kyle G), Glenn and Ross as well as his sister Santina in Zurich, Switzerland. Tony is also survived by nieces and nephews in Italy and France along with extended family residing in the Nanaimo area.
Along with many other Europeans of the post WW II era, Tony immigrated to Canada in 1952 to seek a better life in Nanaimo with sponsorship from his Uncle Angelo and Christina Sedola as well as support from a growing Italian community. Tony & Maria operated he Balmoral Cafe from 1958-1975, recruiting June & George whether they liked it or not. Tony & Maria's circle of friends expanded by being long time members of the Canadian Restaurant Association.
For 40 years, Tony was a correspondent for the Italian Consulate providing assistance to Italians throughout central Vancouver Island. A proud member of the Felice Cavalotti Lodge for nearly 50 years, Tony could be found playing bocce or cards with his "amici" on most Sunday afternoons. He was also a member of the Alpini Club of Vancouver and the Italian Canadian Circle of Nanaimo. Morning meetings of the Nanaimo Coffee Club at Beefeater's Restaurant gave Tony the opportunity to bond with other long time residents for the past 20 years.
Singing brought Tony much joy, his favourite songs being "Tiny Bubbles" and "That's Amore!". Being the "maestro", he gave other singers their cue to chime in during sing alongs. His decades of wine making skills continued to his last batch, vintage September 2019. "Salute!"
Tony was known and loved as Husband, Dad, Papa, Papa Tony, Uncle Tony, "fratello" and "Zio".
His family would like to thank the staff and residents at Berwick on the Lake, staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, and Anchor Family Medicine for their love and support.
