January 3, 1953 - February 20, 2025

In loving memory ~

Amy Olive Fleming (January 3, 1953-February 20, 2025) passed away peacefully after a recurrence of cancer. She leaves behind loving family members Jesse Fleming, Sarah Fleming, and Chipper Roth (Peter Fleming), as well as many relatives, friends, neighbours and colleagues.

Born in Edmonton to Bryce and Mary Anna (née Crocker) Fleming, Amy grew up in West Vancouver. Excelling in her studies at West Vancouver Secondary, she was awarded a scholarship to Neuchâtel Junior College in Switzerland. After a memorable year studying, travelling and absorbing European culture, Amy returned to Vancouver and attended the University of B.C. She completed a B.A. in Linguistics, then a M.Sc. in Audiology and Speech Sciences.

She began her career as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the Prince Rupert school district, enjoying the professional challenge while also developing lifelong friendships. In 1984 she relocated to Nanaimo, working in the Nanaimo School District for the rest of her career. She served many schools, students and families as well as mentoring UBC practicum students and many others along her journey.

A personal and professional highlight was her invaluable partnership in the Provincial Outreach Program for students with autism. Also, in 2010, UBC recognized her contributions as a Clinical Assistant Professor. Upon her retirement in 2020, she was awarded the Honours of the Association by Speech and Hearing BC for her lifelong contributions to her profession.

In her leisure time, Amy enjoyed a wide variety of activities, creating around her an extensive network of friends. Everyone will remember her generosity and skill, supplying delicious baked goods on any occasion, and also creating beautiful crocheted handwork to give to others. She had a life-long love of choral music: a noteworthy experience was a cross-country trip with her high school choir for Expo '67. She continued singing in both church and community choirs, a reliable anchor and occasional soloist in the alto section. She was also active in many other groups at St. Paul's Anglican Church, in the Nanaimo chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women, and in classes (with hot chocolate and lively chat afterwards) at Bend Over Backwards Yoga.

As well, Amy's interest in clothing trends led her to forming warm friendships with the staff at Damsels Fashions. In the summertime, swimming was another passion. Many of us have accompanied Amy to one of her favourite spots for an evening dip. She had a particular love for the Islands, relishing jaunts to Tofino, Victoria, Quadra Island—wherever she could find skilled local artisans, tasty restaurants, and beautiful walks! In all these activities she was well-known for her ready friendship, generosity and willingness to pitch in.

Amy's life was marked by dedication, service, friendship, and creativity. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. We are grateful for the many warm memories she has left us.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Nanaimo on Saturday, March 8th, 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Paul's Anglican Church, Nanaimo, or to Nanaimo Foodshare Society.
