In loving memory ~
It is with heavy hearts the family announces the passing of Al at Nanaimo Hospital September 3rd, 2022. Al was predeceased by his parents, Arthur & Margaret Savage, his grandparents, Archie & Maggie Allan, of 5 Acres at 8th and Bruce and son-in-law Gregg Stewart. Al is survived by his loving wife of 66 years and business partner, Colleen and their three children, Tracy Savage (Val), Tammy Galbraith (Doug) and Teri Stewart (Joe). Al was also known as "Papa" to four grandchildren, Keith (Adrienne), Stephanie (Rob), Kent (Victoria), and Anthony (Kyra).
Al was raised in Nanaimo, attended Harewood Elementary and John Shaw High School. His family moved to California in 1951 where he finished high school before moving back to Canada in 1953. Al met Colleen on Granville Street in 1955 and they were married a year later. During the next 10 years Al and Colleen expanded their family while Al pursued a career in finance that brought their growing family from Nanaimo to Victoria and later, North Vancouver.
They finally settled in Nanaimo in 1965 where Al became district manager of Canadian Acceptance Corp. on Victoria Crescent. Throughout the 1970s Al embraced his entrepreneurial spirit, becoming a mortgage broker and forming his own company, Havilland Holdings, investing in and building homes in Nanaimo, and with his partners owned one of Nanaimo's most popular spots, Tivoli's Disco. In 1983, Al got his real estate license and began a 36-year career in Real Estate.
Working hand in hand with his wife, Al and Colleen became very well known in Nanaimo, particularly for their catch phrase, "It's a jungle out there! Call the Savages!" Al loved Real Estate and finally retired at 83. Over Al's lifetime he enjoyed collecting vintage cars, homemade wine with family and friends, watching the birds in his garden, and sharing entertaining videos and weblinks with his many friends over email. More than anything else, Al will be remembered for his bigger than life personality, tireless passion for his work and devotion to his wife and family.
Thank you to all of the doctors, nurses, and care aides that took such good care Al during his hospital stay. A special thank you to Dr. McGlynn for the care, attention, and conversations that Al so enjoyed.
