Community members can revitalize old electronics, bikes, clothes and more at a ‘Fix-Up Factory’ happening next weekend at Nanaimo’s Harbourfront Library.
On Saturday, May 27, young volunteer ‘fixers’ from Youth 20/20 Can will set up in the library to teach community members how to fix broken items like computers, home appliances, clothing, shoes, instruments, bikes and skateboards.
The general rule for the day is that as long as the item can be carried through the doors single-handedly, volunteers will try to help fix it.
Rebecca Bischoff, a 17-year-old volunteer, organized the project and will be working at the ‘kids section’ during the program.
“I like being able to learn new skills volunteering because you interact with so many different types of people and encounter a lot of different situations. It’s fun learning to navigate those,” she said.
Anni Thesen, a youth engagement worker, described the organization as a “youth-led initiative where youths come up with ideas that matter to them and what they think matters to the community, and they work with community partners, like the library, to turn the ideas into a reality.”
The Fix-Up Factory will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants are expected to bring certain necessary materials to fix the broken items, for example a new inner tube for a flat bicycle tire.
