Woman sustains serious injuries in rollover crash at Bowen and Northfield in Nanaimo

Patient had to be extricated from vehicle after single-vehicle crash Nov. 18

A woman suffered serious, life-threatening injuries in a rollover crash on Northfield Road in Nanaimo this afternoon, Nov. 18.

According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, first responders were called to a single-vehicle rollover at the intersection of Northfield and Bowen roads. When police arrived on scene they located a woman inside a Chrysler wagon that had come to rest on its side.

A witness told investigators that it appeared the driver and lone occupant struck a power pole, causing the vehicle to tip over. Fire crews managed to extricate the woman, who was transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Traffic on Bowen Road was impacted but not interrupted, said Const. Gary O’Brien. A section of Northfield Road was closed.

“Until such time the vehicle involved is towed from the scene, south-bound traffic on Bowen Road cannot turn right or westbound onto Northfield Road to access the Nanaimo Parkway,” O’Brien said in the press release.

Police don’t think speed was a factor, but are asking anyone with video or dash cam footage to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line 250-754-2345, quoting file No. 2021-42984.

According to ICBC statistics, there were 31 crashes at Bowen and Northfield roads in 2020, seventh among Nanaimo intersections with the most crashes.
