The driver of a car that smashed through two street lamp standards before striking a rock garden is in good condition.

The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday at the Maughan Road intersection when a 71-year-old woman lost control of her Chevrolet Malibu while travelling north on the Duke Point Highway.

The woman was airlifted from the crash site to Victoria General Hospital in serious condition. Police said she had possibly suffered a stroke, causing her to lose control of the car.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for about four hours while traffic analysts conducted an investigation.

Const. Joe Furtmann, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said the woman reportedly suffered no trauma from the collision and was up and walking at the crash scene, but had no recollection of the crash.

“It looks like she’s doing well,” Furtmann said.
