Woman injured fending off attempted robbery at ATM

NANAIMO – Woman struck on head with firearm during robbery attempt on Labieux Road.

A woman was struck in the head while struggling with a would-be robber on the weekend.

The altercation happened shortly before 9:30 p.m. when a woman withdrew money from an outdoor ATM machine at the Coastal Community Credit Union at 2350 Labieux Rd. and was confronted by another woman who showed her a gun in a messenger bag and demanded cash and the keys to the victim’s vehicle. The victim didn’t believe the robber’s firearm was real and refused to hand over her cash and keys.

The two struggled and the suspect hit the victim over the head with the gun before she fled west on Labieux Road. The suspect is described as Caucasian, skinny, about 5’4”, in her late 30s to early 40s, and was wearing fitted blue jeans, black sweater, black vest,  dark hat and ankle boots.

Police advise people when confronted with a robbery attempt to comply with demands, observe as much detail as possible and call 911. People should also maintain awareness about their surroundings when using ATMs.
