Woman hit by car still in hospital

Nanaimo woman hit by suspected drunk driver still in hospital.

A woman struck by a car in north Nanaimo last week is still in hospital undergoing surgery.

The victim was hit Wednesday by a speeding car on Icarus Drive Dec. 28.

A black two-door hatchback, driven southbound down Icarus Drive at high speed, lost control and hit a tree, bushes and other landscaping before striking the woman who was walking her dog.

A family member, who asked that neither she nor the victim be identified, said the victim is undergoing multiple surgeries and remains in hospital. She declined to disclose the extent or nature of the injuries.

It was originally incorrectly reported by RCMP that the woman was released from hospital the same day as the crash.

The driver of the car tried to flee the scene, but was held by a retired RCMP officer until police arrived. The driver was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police have recommended charges of driving while over the legal .08 and impaired driving causing bodily harm against the driver, who will appear in Nanaimo provincial court April 2.
