An elderly Nanaimo woman is in critical but stable condition after she was struck by a car Monday morning.
The woman, 89, was hit shortly after 10 a.m. while she was crossing Boundary Road at the Dufferin Street intersection and was hit by a pickup truck, driven by a Nanaimo man, 70, making a left turn from Dufferin Street onto Boundary Road.
Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said the driver and numerous witnesses came to the woman's aid at the busy intersection in front of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
"She was bleeding from an apparent head wound," O'Brien said. "She is deemed to be critical. She is conscious. She is in the hospital and that's the only update we have at this point."
Police traffic analysts were investigating the scene of the accident and have called for a mechanical inspection of the truck. There is no word on any potential charges against the driver.
O'Brien said the woman was in the crosswalk and the driver was turning on a green light. Speed, alcohol and weather are not considered factors in the accident.
"The only thing we're looking at is the congestion in the area," O'Brien said. "There were a number of cars around going in different directions."
