Woman charged in bear spray assault

NANAIMO – Woman charged after bear spraying another woman in hotel room.

Police arrested a man and a woman following a bear spraying incident in a Nanaimo hotel on the weekend.

The assault happened shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday when a woman, staying at a local hotel, answered a knock on her door.

She was greeted by two men and a woman who bear sprayed her and then fled.

The victim was treated by firefighters and paramedics at the scene, who also had to evacuate several nearby rooms because of contamination from the spray. No one else was affected by the spray.

Police said the suspects all know each other and have recommended charges of assault against a 27-year-old Nanaimo woman accused of spraying the victim. She will appear in Nanaimo provincial court May 6.

Charges were not recommended against the male suspect.
