Weekend police blitz nails drunk drivers

NANAIMO – RCMP roadblocks tally up traffic citations and bag drunk drivers.

RCMP roadblocks from north Nanaimo to Cedar took their toll on impaired drivers on the weekend.

More than 20 traffic officers from across the Island swarmed into Nanaimo and set up 11 roadblocks. From 5 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday police bagged five impaired drivers and issue six three-day prohibitions, five 12-hour prohibitions, one 24-hour drug prohibition and conducted two drug seizures.

In total, 18 vehicles were towed or impounded and 65 tickets were issued for a variety of offences under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Since Jan. 1, the Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Unit has apprehended 74 drunk drivers.
