Vancouver Island University is trying to bring greater understanding of climate change to the masses.
It’s doing so by inviting the public to a symposium and workshop on climate change (Monday) May 9, hosted by the Awareness of Climate Change through Education and Research project.
“This event will focus on communicating climate change and examining the barriers to understanding and change,” says Erik Krogh, co-director of VIU’s Applied Environmental Research Laboratories.
The objectives of the event are to:
u Promote scientific literacy on the issue of climate change;
u Provide hands-on activities to support deeper learning and critical thinking;
u Provide a forum for interactive discussions, particularly on the topic of communicating climate change.
Invited speakers will talk about the latest climate science, climate modeling, computer-aided learning tools and communicating the issue of climate change to diverse audiences. Workshops will include hands-on activities ranging from the use of digital learning objects, evidence based decision-making, CO2 measuring lab, and exhibits on energy conservation and agriculture.
Guest speakers include Nathan Gillett from Environment Canada, Jeremy Fyke from Andrew Weaver’s Climate lab at the University of Victoria, and Brian Martin from the King’s Centre for the Visualization of Science in Edmonton.
The symposium will be held on the Nanaimo campus of Vancouver Island University in the Arts & Science building (Bldg 355) starting at 8:30 a.m. Pre-registration is required via email to ACER@VIU.ca.
