Uplands Park Elementary School was once again the target of vandals over the long weekend.
Several windows were smashed when vandals broke in through a door on the west side of the building at about 7:30 p.m. Monday. They also broke two classroom windows on the same side of the building.
The culprits then went through a hallway, but were unable to get into classrooms, which are locked at night to prevent theft. Instead they knocked over several chairs and a trolley cart in one of the building's hallways before fleeing.
"Security was on scene by 7:45 p.m., but there was nobody around," said Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
O'Brien said the school has installed a Mosquito device to deter young people from loitering on the premises.
"We have to see how that is," O'Brien said. "That was just recently installed."
Estimated cost to repair the windows is about $600.
In January of last year, the school was targeted by vandals who lit a fire in a patio area of the school and attempted to break in. In February 2012, vandals smashed the school's windows and smeared dog feces on doors. Three teens were arrested for that incident, vandalism at Randerson Ridge Elementary School and for breaking into a nearby construction site.
