Nanaimo’s Sikh community is celebrating the beginning of spring this month.
The city’s two Sikh temples are hosting Vaisakhi celebrations this month, with events Friday through Sunday, April 14-16, at the Miri Piri Darbar temple on Prideaux Street, and on April 22 – to coincide with the Surrey Vaisakhi Parade – at Nanaimo’s Third Street temple.
April is Sikh Heritage Month and a time to celebrate the contributions Sikhs have made in B.C., noted Mable Elmore, B.C.’s parliamentary secretary for anti-racism initiatives, in a statement.
“April is a particularly important time in Sikhism as it marks the occasion of Vaisakhi, the beginning of spring harvest and the start of a new agricultural year…” she said. “This Sikh Heritage Month, I encourage all British Columbians to learn more about the incredible and selfless contributions that Sikh Canadians have made – and continue to make – in shaping our province. By taking the time to celebrate and learn about the diverse communities in our province, we can make B.C. a more inclusive and welcoming place for everyone.”
Shiv Sharma, host of the Apna Sur Sangeet radio show on CHLY, will be hosting a special Vaisakhi show on Saturday, April 16, from 3-5 p.m. For more information, call 250-740-1017.
