A house on Durnin Road in Nanaimo suffered heavy damage after a fire Friday afternoon.
East Wellington Fire Department responded to the fire, near Maxey Road, and according to Jack Van Doorn, fire chief, it was contained by about 5 p.m.
The fire didn’t look suspicious, but Van Doorn said it is not currently known how it started. Firefighters attacked the fire using a compressed air foam system, he said.
“So it blankets it with water and foam to smother and cool at the same time; it’s a little bit more advanced in the fire-fighting industry and the difficulties we’re having right now is there’s two layers of roofing material.
“It has been burning between the layers, so at this point, we’re just doing our cleanup and going through and overhauling to make sure that there’s no hot spots remaining and nothing’s going to flare up,” said Van Doorn.
