Update: Coroners service identifies man killed in Nanaimo Parkway crash

NANAIMO – Two-vehicle collision on Nanaimo Parkway leaves one man dead, one in critical condition.

B.C.'s Coroners Service released the identity of a 19-year-old Ladysmith man who died following a two-vehicle collision on the Nanaimo Parkway on Monday.

Zachary Michael Andrews, 19, died in the crash that happened at about 10:30 p.m. south of Mostar Road, when a southbound black Suzuki Sidekick SUV crossed into the northbound lanes at the Mostar Road intersection and collided head-on with a Mazda RX8 travelling in the northbound fast lane.

Andrews was driving the Mazda in the northbound lanes.

"It looked like [the driver of the Suzuki Sidekick] was pulling into the turn lane and then he proceeded straight into the northbound lanes," said Const. Kate Mooney, Nanaiamo RCMP spokeswoman. "There was someone following him for a while who said he was driving erratically."

The 35-year-old man from Nanoose Bay who was driving the Suzuki was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital.

The Nanaimo Parkway northbound lanes were closed for about five hours while Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Services and a collision analyst investigated the scene.

Police do not yet know why the Suzuki's driver drove into oncoming traffic and the crash is still under investigation.

Anyone with any information regarding this collision, please contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 and refer to file 2015-29322.
