Two people hurt, highway lanes closed after crash in Nanaimo’s north end

Incident happened at the old Island Highway and Mary Ellen Drive

Two people were hurt in a three-vehicle crash in Nanaimo’s north end this morning.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue, B.C. Ambulance Service and Nanaimo RCMP are on scene at Mary Ellen Drive and the old Island Highway following the collision, which happened a little after 11:30 a.m.

Crews on scene said two patients were being transported to hospital with unknown injuries. Other occupants are still being checked over at scene.

Southbound lanes of the old Island Highway are closed.

According to ICBC statistics released yesterday, July 5, there were 21 crashes at that intersection in 2021, 15th most among Nanaimo intersections, and 72 crashes during the five-year period from 2017-2021.
