Third Lantzville staff member resigns

NANAIMO – District of Lantzville planner latest to quit in series of council, staff resignations.

A senior community planner is the latest to resign in a mass departure at the District of Lantzville.

Community planner Lisa Bhopalsingh resigned last week, according to interim chief administrative officer Jim Dias. Bhopalsingh, hired earlier this year as a member of Lantzville’s five-person management team, is the third senior staff member to quit since April, following chief administrative officer Twyla Graff and director of finance Jedha Holmes.

Bhopalsingh did not say why she is resigning, said Dias. Her last day is still being worked out but will be around the beginning of August and a replacement is still under discussion.

The District of Lantzville has made headlines this year for a series of resignations. Graff was the first to step down April 1 after nine years as top bureaucrat. The move happened on the heels of a memo to council, signed by all five of the district’s managers, that highlighted concerns around decorum and tone of council meetings, including ridicule and criticism of staff’s work in public. Holmes also quit in April, followed by resignations by councillors Jennifer Millbank, Rod Negrave, Dave Scott and Graham Savage.

A byelection is scheduled for Aug. 8.

Mayor Colin Haime and Lantzville councillors were unavailable for comment.
