A microbrewery that was close to starting production in downtown Nanaimo had a setback after thieves broke in and stole specialized brewing equipment and power tools.

According to police, the owners of Cliffside Brewing Company, located at 11 Cliff St., said the break-in likely happened sometime overnight, May 2, whens culprits forced their way in through a side door and even took the business’ video surveillance cameras.

“This really hurts and will definitely set us back,” said Jack Eubank, a retired RCMP member and one of the business owners, in a press release. “Before the break-in we were about four months from opening. The tools are replaceable but the equipment taken is designed specifically for brewing. Some of it hasn’t even been used yet. The brewing machine alone is worth $6,500.”

Some of the power tools were recovered in downtown Nanaimo a couple of days after the break-in was reported, but the brewing equipment and other tools are still missing.

Anyone with information about the stolen items or knows who is responsible for the break and enter, is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP 250-754-2345. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com or call 1-800-222-8477.
